Mahalia Jackson was originally from New Orleans, but spent most of her adult life in Chicago. For many years, she was a hairdresser in town. The marker is located in front of the Chatham home she lived in, on Indiana Avenue at 84th Street (very close to Roland Burris’ current home, by the way).

they recently put up a marker to recognize her down the street where I live.
